There are four main points of storage: the container, conditions, location, and how to prevent bugs.
Storage Container
The summer heat and humidity can cause your beans to grow mold. So, it is best to keep them in a cool area, fridge, or freezer in an airtight container. Store beans in an airtight container such as a water bottle or a zip lock bag.
Storage Conditions
Beans can be kept fresh for a long time by sealing them in a plastic baggie or airtight water bottle and putting it into the freezer. Using an airtight container prevents the beans from getting a freezer smell. Keep beans that are stored in the freezer or fridge on the top shelf away from raw meats that can cross-contaminate the beans. Beans can store better if you wash the beans, drain them, boil them with salt, rinse, and then store them in a freezer bag. Precooking your beans can make them last even longer.
Storage Location
Do not store beans next to strong-smelling objects such as detergent and grease. Do not store your bags of beans on the floor. Keep them at least 6 inches off the ground to prevent cross-contamination from accidental chemical spillage or water damage.
Bug Prevention
Finally, let’s talk about how to prevent bugs in your beans. Prevent bugs in your beans by putting coarse salt on the bottom of the container of beans. Putting the beans in an airtight container also prevents bugs and mold.
