Rice can grow rice worms especially if it is organic. You can still use this rice if you see that beetles have begun to show up.
- The way to get rid of beetles is to spread the rice out on a mat in an area that has wind and no sun/direct sunlight. By doing this, the beetles will dry out and die. Then when you wash the rice, you can remove the dried beetles. Beetles can show up even if you have not opened the bag of rice yet. If you see beetles in your bag or rice, open the bag and pick out a few of them right away.
- To prevent bugs in the future, you can place onion, garlic, or pepper into your rice bin to prevent further worms from going into your rice. Make sure to monitor the onion, garlic, or pepper to make sure it doesn’t go bad. Put the onion or garlic in a bowl and then place it into the rice container.
