When buying beans in bulk:
- Avoid beans that are shriveled or broken. Look for intact, bright-colored, uniform, and smooth (unless normally bumpy) beans.
- Avoid beans with stones and debris.
- Avoid beans with holes in them because it could indicate that bugs have encountered those beans. It could also mean that the beans are old, or they were not stored properly.
When buying packaged beans:
- Buy tightly sealed packages with no punctures.
