Dried fern brake has a unique smell and plush texture when cooked. It has a savory flavor. Dried fernbrake is often added to soups or made into a side dish. It is best to store this dried vegetable in the freezer, fridge, or cool dry area.
When prepping the dried fern brake, first rinse the dried fern brake in cold water. Then let it soak in cold water for 6 hours – overnight, ideally in the fridge. Soaking helps to remove some of the unique smell from the fernbrake. Next, simmer it for 30 minutes in water or rice water to remove some of the smell. Finally, Drain and wash the fernbrake in cold water and it is ready to use in your recipe.
