There are three main points of storage: the container, conditions, and location.
Storage Container
The best container to use for your rice and grains is an airtight container. A kimchi container or vittles vault (which is a type of dog food container) are two airtight container options that I recommend.
Airtight containers keep out foreign materials and the air. If you do not want to invest in an airtight container you can keep the rice in the original bag sealed with a clip tight enough to keep out any dust or air or a zip lock bag.
Storage Conditions
Keep your rice and grains away from heat and moisture. When storing your rice, find a cool and dry (low humidity) location. Finding the coolest and driest location that has little temperature difference between night and day is ideal. Putting your grain in the freezer is a great option.
Storage Location
Rice should be placed in an area that is not only dry and cool but which does not encounter direct sunlight. When rice is exposed to sunlight it becomes dry, cracks, the starch comes out and the rice is prone to deterioration.
As you know, rice is very absorbent. Do not put rice next to strong-smelling objects such as detergent and grease since it can absorb the smell. If it smells wash the rice.
Finally, do not store your bags of rice on the floor. Keep them at least 6 inches off the ground to prevent cross-contamination from accidental chemical spillage or water damage.
